Session 3 — COO “You now manage a workforce you’ve never met.”

Written by Synergy Technical | July 28, 2026

Welcome to Session 3 of Synergy Technical's AI Summer School, an executive thought leadership series exploring the leadership questions every organization will face as AI moves from experimentation to enterprise capability. Each session focuses on a different executive perspective—and the decisions that separate AI pilots from measurable business outcomes.

Somewhere in your operation right now, an AI agent is holding credentials, touching systems, and making decisions inside a process you own. You didn’t interview it. You can’t see its calendar. And if someone asked you today who is accountable for what it did last Tuesday, you’d have to think about it.

That is the quiet reality of operations in 2026. The challenge is no longer acquiring agents — that part turned out to be easy. The challenge is that you have become responsible for the output of autonomous systems you didn’t build and can’t fully audit. You are, in every sense that matters, managing a workforce you’ve never met.

A human workforce comes with infrastructure you take for granted: a manager, a review cadence, an escalation path, a record of who did what. Agents arrived with none of it. They were deployed as features, not as employees — and so nobody owns the governance cadence, because governance was never part of the purchase. The result is a growing share of your operation running without the oversight you’d require of any human doing the same work.

This is the new operations headache, and it doesn’t announce itself as a governance gap. It shows up as a decision no one can explain, an action no one authorized, or a result no one can trace back to a cause. By the time it surfaces as a problem, it has usually already run several times.

The instinct is to hire your way out of it by building an AI operations team. For most mid-market organizations, that's slower and more expensive than the problem warrants. What you actually need is a clear operating model: a named owner responsible for agent oversight, a regular cadence for reviewing performance, KPI governance so agents are measured like any other member of the workforce, and a defined escalation path for when they get it wrong.

That is exactly what we built the AI Governance & CoE (Center of Excellence) Managed Service to provide. It gives the COO a named, accountable owner for the agent workforce — oversight, KPI governance, and escalation — without the cost and lead time of building an internal AI operations team from scratch. Think of it as the management layer your agents shipped without.

Underneath it, AI Managed Services keeps the agents running and tuned, and outcome dashboards in Power BI give you the same thing you’d expect from any team you manage: visibility. What are they doing, how well, against which targets, and where are they drifting. You cannot manage a workforce you can’t see — and until now, the agent workforce has been the one you couldn’t.

The COOs who get ahead of this won’t be the ones who deployed the most agents. They’ll be the ones who managed them like a workforce before an incident forced the question. Oversight after the fact is called an investigation. Oversight before the fact is just good operations.

You already manage people you’ve met to a higher standard than the systems now making decisions in your name. Close that gap on purpose, while it’s still your choice to make.
